Quality control

Subir Chowdhury tries to see the positive light in everything and everyone.

His positive energy was the inspiration behind his latest book, "The Ice Cream Maker."

"It's all about quality," said the 38-year-old Northville Township resident and CEO of ASI Consulting Group in Livonia. "It's about changing the negatives into positives and making the most out of everything you do."

Chowdhury said "The Ice Cream Maker," his 12th book, will help American's put quality back into their lives both at home and work.

Chowdhury moved to America in 1991 from Bangladesh, India to obtain his masters degree from Central Michigan and an honorary doctorate of engineering from Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula.

Now, living in Northville Township with his wife, Malini, and 4-year-old daughter Anandi, Chowdhury said quality is something everyone wants, but no one can explain.

"Quality is looking in the mirror every morning and saying to yourself 'I must do a better job today than I did yesterday," he said.

Accounting for the hustle and bustle of everyday life, "The Ice Cream Maker" tells the story of Peter Delvecchio, a plant manager for an ice cream manufacturer with stagnant sales on the verge of closing.

"Everything in this book is real," Chowdhury said. "All things I've witnessed in my life."

Chowdhury said the purpose of the book is to prove satisfied employees who are passionate about their work are more likely to produce quality work and better meet the needs of their customers.

"As Americans, we like creating, inventing and pioneering," Chowdhury said. "However, we seem less interested in sustaining and improving quality once the innovation has taken place."

Chowdhury said his book demonstrates American's have lost out to competing nations who are better at providing quality.

"When America becomes as passionate about delivering quality products and services as it is about innovation," he said, "no nation will be able to compete with the U.S.

"This is not a book solely for the business world," Chowdhury said. "It's for everyone both inside and outside the office."

Chowdhury hoped his book would help readers understand that in order to practice quality, they must have passion in whatever they do.

"You must be passionate to have that positive energy," he said. "Listening, enriching and optimizing are the keys to achieving goals and increasing life long satisfaction."
